Cadets on Semester Abroad in Morocco spent several days in the small village of Zawiya Ahansal, a small village in the Atlas Mountains, learning about the local tamazik culture, language and way of life. Sidi Said Ahansal, a Muslim prophet, founded the village that is now a resting stop for religious pilgrimages in Morocco. Cadets stayed in the local sheik’s house, taught English at the school, discussed local politics and issues with NGO leadership, and even learned traditional Moroccan dancing! This unique experience allowed the Cadets to gain perspective on daily village life, utilize their leadership and linguistic skills in a classroom setting and when interacting with the locals, and gain greater awareness of the physical geography of the Atlas Mountains.
