Following 4 weeks of military training in the Pyrenees Mountains with their Spanish counterparts, cadets participating in Spain semester abroad began academic classes at the Spanish Military Academy. The military training consisted of land navigation, climbing and rappelling, squad and platoon movements, as well as basic military skills. West Point Cadets served as Cadre and instructors for first-year Spanish Cadets during the training. Before beginning classes, Cadets also participated in the 24th annual International Defense Conference, a joint event between the Spanish Military Academy and the neighboring University of Zaragoza. The topic of this year's conference was "Immigration in the 21st Century: Risks and Opportunities." West Point Cadets had the opportunity to participate in round-table discussions with their Spanish counterparts, local university students, and other international students participating in the conference.
