COL John Hartke (D/PaNE) and Dr. Gunnar Tamm (D/CME) traveled with cadets Tina Le ’19 (Physics), Jordan Johnson ’18 (Chemistry), Tsu Kreidler ’18 (Mech Eng), and Luke O’Neill ’17 (Nuke Eng) to the Directed Energy Professional Society’s Directed Energy Systems Symposium in Norfolk, VA. The cadets presented their interdisciplinary research on the effects of a high energy laser on a rotating mortar in the Employment of Directed Energy Weapons Conference and the Directed Energy Modeling and Simulation Conferences. In addition to presenting their work they were able to interact with leaders from the government, industry and across academia working on developing high energy laser weapons for all branches of the military. They also attended a presentation by and met with MG Bo Dyess ’82, the Deputy Director of the Army Capabilities Integration Center on the future of directed energy in the Army. The research is funded by the High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office and the Army Research Office.
