Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. ACM Special Interest Group for Security, Auditing and Control (SIGSAC) Hosts ROTC Programs for Presentation by ACI’s CPT Rhoades on Dark Web Research. The cadet SIGSAC club recently hosted their monthly guest speaker, CPT Blake Rhoades from the ACI’s Threat Analysis Cell. In his talk, he highlighted the many differences between the Internet we see every day, the deep web consisting of sites not readily searchable or protected by passwords, and then finally, the Dark Web. The Dark Web discussion tied into recent breaches, such as OPM, and how fast the information from that compromise becomes available for purchase. Additionally, he explored the basic content found on the Dark Web and why it is such a popular location for criminal organizations. He explained methods of access, how it becomes hard to track users through de-anonymizing apps, and most importantly, how enemies, such as ISIS are using this realm to further their operations.
