Shea Tabbed with Patriot Weekly Honors

CDT Clare Shea '18For the second time this season, Army West point women's soccer player Clare Shea was named the Patriot League Corvias Midfielder of the Week. The junior earned her first weekly nod of the season back on Sept. 19, when she posted two assists in a 4-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. Shea had a hand in each of Army's goals Saturday in which the Black Knights captured a 2-1 victory over Loyola Maryland. The Allendale, N.J., native helped the Cadets get on the board by sending a cross to teammate Sam Gottlieb for the first tally of the game in the 24th minute. She then tallied the eventual game-winner, chipping it in from 40-yards out in the 30th minute. Read More

USMA-Vassar Initiative: Liam Kennedy Lecture & DinnerMembers of the USMA-Vassar Initiative travelled to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York to attend a History Department Charles C. Griffin Lecture given by Dr. Liam Kennedy, Director of the Clinton Institute for American Studies at the University College Dublin. The lecture, “Follow the Americans: Photography and US Foreign Policy,” explored war photojournalism from Vietnam, the Iran Hostage Crisis, Nicaragua, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq, considering its influence on international affairs. In attendance was Dr. Jonathan Chenette, Interim President of Vassar College. Following the lecture, members of the initiative joined Dr. Chenette and Dr. Kennedy for a group dinner in which Cadets and Vassar College students got to know each other better. In its fifth year, the USMA-Vassar Initiative part of a Mellon Foundation funded project designed to bridge the civil-military divide.

Epps, Riley Score in Win Over Stony Brook

CDT Rex Epps '20The Army West Point men's soccer team used a pair of first-half goals to come away with a 2-0 nonconference victory over Stony Brook on Tuesday evening at Clinton Field. Army improves to 7-5-1 after the win, while Stony Brook drops to 7-5-2. Freshman Rex Epps scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season and now ranks tied for first in the Patriot League in the category. He found the back of the net in the third minute to put the Black Knights on the board early before junior Okheem Riley netted a goal in the 43rd minute to add to the host's advantage. Freshman keeper Justin Stoll stopped a season-high nine shots to preserve his fourth shutout of the year. Tuesday marked the first-ever meeting between Army and Stony Brook. Epps' eighth goal of the year is the most for an Army player in a single season since Thomas Obaseki (USMA '01) scored nine goals during the 1998 season. Epps' strike came 2:59 into the match and marks Army's quickest goal to begin a game this season. D-CME Participates in Steel DayThe Department of Civil & Mechanical Engineering participated in Steel Day hosted by United Steel in East Hartford, Connecticut. Steel Day is an annual event sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and hosted by its members and partners. It is the steel industry’s largest educational and networking function, with events all over the country. This year, 27 civil engineering majors and four faculty and staff toured the facilities of United Steel, which is considered the largest fabricator and erector of structural steel and miscellaneous metals in New England. United Steel, in conjunction with local vendors, provided all that attended with an opportunity to see how the structural steel industry contributes to building America.

Cycling Competes in the ECCC Conference Finals

Over the weekend the AWPCT headed over to Highland Mountain Bike Park in New Hampshire to compete in the ECCC Conference Finals. The team sent seven competitors spanning all four classes. Braving torrential down pour and stiff competition, the team showed resilience as they continued to perform at a high level on the trails. The AWPCT came in 5th in team omnium for the ECCC Mountain Bike Season. Top finishers for the weekend include Dan Forquer ’17 placing 3rd in the Enduro race and Sarah LaRue ’17 placing 5th in the cross country race. The team relay made up of yearlings and plebes on the team placed 4th in the CAT A relay, up against serious competition from the other schools. Another MTB season in the books. Riders now need to put on the knobbies for cyclocross in the following months!

Power Lifting Volunteers at the Hudson Valley Regional Food BankAt the facility, the team was greeted by Ms. Carol Griffin-DePaolis, a volunteer coordinator at the facility. She kindly offered us a quick tour of the building and outlined for us what volunteers typically do to help out the food bank. The team was quickly assigned to an assortment of jobs, to include sorting, packing, weighing, recycling, labeling, organizing, and redistributing the mix of brand goods that arrived at the facility. The “work” was simple, yet arduous and rewarding. The team sorted 9,650lbs of donated food!

Cadets Abroad Attend the Nordic Council of MinistersCadets studying abroad in Latvia attended a panel discussion entitled “Sustainable Political Development in the Region.” The Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Latvia hosted the event at Daugavpils University. Ambassadors representing Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark attended. Panel participants discussed topics that included development, unemployment, education, health care reform, and international relations. The panelists presented what they considered a template for success in both foreign and domestic affairs. The core of their recommendations centered around understanding the uniqueness of the various cultures and regions; giving the populace a more active voice in local government; and making needed reforms to address some of the outstanding grievances. An informal reception followed the discussion, allowing participants to continue to exchange views and interact directly with high-ranking diplomats. The same group of cadets had an opportunity to travel to Berlin to experience the Soviet influence on East Berlin. The Cadets visited the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Karlhorst Museum, constructed by the Soviet authorities as a museum to mark the Nazi surrender.

T.J. Brady ’96 Writer and Producer Visits CadetsT.J. Brady ’96 writer and producer visited cadets in the Department of English and Philosophy. In the morning, he spoke with Dr. Cassandra Nelson’s EN367 Drama class about his play “LP/OP” which the cadets read as part of course. Then in the afternoon he hosted a discussion with cadets from the Creative Writing Forum and Film Forum entitled “Writing for Television.” The discussion was a fascinating and productive exploration of how creativity and expression are intimately connected to professional success both in and out of the Army. While his play “LP/OP”, published in January 2016, confronts themes relating to service members in Afghanistan and the challenges their families face at home, T.J. has also contributed to a variety of television series such as “Narcos,” “The 100,” and “Animal Kingdom.”

Civil & Military Engineering at the ASCE National ConventionThe Civil & Military Engineering Club traveled to Portland, OR for the annual ASCE National Convention. The trip section included eight cadets and three C&ME faculty. The cadets and faculty attended technical tours describing the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Highway and ending at the Bonneville Dam which is operated by USACE. Some cadets attended a tour of the bridges in Portland that span the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. At the conference, sessions included sustainability and infrastructure systems, engineering for social progress, operating the Columbia River hydropower system. Cadets also made contact with representatives from a new nuclear reactor being built near Dubai, setting up a site visit during our upcoming spring break trip.

WPOCT Supports a PMA Comm Visit

WPOCT Supports a PMA Comm Visit10 Cadets from the West Point Obstacle Course (WPOCT) supported a visit from the Commandant of the Polish Military Academy. The Polish Commandant expressed interest in building a Leader Reaction Course (LRC) at the Polish Academy and wanted to see USMA cadets execute our course. The cadets completed five obstacles, rotating leadership each time. After each rotation the cadets completed a thorough AAR examining their plan, execution and leadership throughout the event. The Polish Commandant complemented the cadets on their physical and mental strength as well as their leadership ability. DMI will send the blueprint for our course to the Polish Academy and they stated they will break ground on a similar course as soon as possible.

Tae Kwon Do Places Second in Div 1 at MITThe Army Martial Arts Team kicked off the season in their first tournament in Division 1 at MIT. The team performed well, leading the majority of gender and belt divisions. In the Men’s Black Belt Division, Matthew Galea, Jordan Nettles, and Ziwei Peng on the A1 team took second place. Anthony Chargualaf, who ended his first match quickly with a knockout, and Ryan Castilla on the A2 team took third. In the Color Belt Men’s Division, William Xu, Ellis Valdez, and Eli Eichenberger on the B1 team dominated every fight, taking first place. In the Women’s Black Belt Division, Natasha Chick, freshman Nicole Nettles, and Wonha Kim on the A1 team fought to second place. In the White Belt Women’s Division, Chloe Smith, Kayla Johnson, and Sarah Juhn on the C1 team showed strong performances, taking third place. Overall, the Army Team placed second, holding its ground among highly competitive Division 1 teams nearly twice its size and pushing MIT to third. A strong start to the new season –One Team, One Fight!

Cadets Visit Yale’s Grand Strategy ProgramMAJ Colas and a section SS307 students visited Yale University to attend a class in Yale’s Grand Strategy Program. During the class, Yale students provided Grand Strategy faculty and cadets with their ‘Marshall Briefs,’ discussing grand strategies towards Russia and the Middle East. After the class, cadets were able to meet with Yale students and several Grand Strategy faculty members, including Professor John Lewis Gaddis, whose work is featured in the SS307 syllabus.

Army with Strong Showing Against YaleThe Army West Point men's swimming and diving team had a strong showing in their scrimmage against Yale on Friday at Crandall Pool. "I'm very proud of our team," stated head coach Mickey Wender. "It was a great way to open our home season, and it was a very spirited competition. I'm very grateful that Yale chose to come swim against us." Josh Sembrano and Mike Stanchi finished first and second respectively in the 200-yard backstroke with corresponding times of 1:51.66 and 1:54.13. The duo also went one and two in the 200-yard backstroke with times of 1:51.66 and 1:54.13 respectively. In the 1000-yard freestyle, Tom Ottman claimed the top spot with a time of 9:24.26, while Jay Young came in just behind him with a mark of 9:27.65. Mr. Cincotta Presents Demography Lecture

Richard Cincotta, Director, Global Political Demography Program at The Stimson Center presented a lunchtime lecture to cadets in the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering that focused on the use of demography to make long-range intelligence forecasts. Over the past decade, demographic research supported by the National Intelligence Council has used age-structural data to better understand, and to predict, statistical aspects of the behavior of today’s modern states. Using these conclusions, the lecture reviewed a set of key “behavioral rules” and geopolitical patterns that provides US military strategists with a glimpse of geopolitics, a decade or two into the future.

K’NEXercise – Building Construction Managers

K’NEXercise – Building Construction ManagersCadets enrolled in CE450, Construction Management, competed in the K’NEXercise. The competition requires teams of cadets to prepare estimates, bids and construction schedules, and then execute the construction of the awarded project using rapid setting concrete and K’NEX components. Cadets then had to defend themselves against frivolous and vexatious litigation from the opposing teams in Court. The winning teams in the Tower, Bridge and Hall projects were led by Cadets Dan Gaynor, Andrew Walther, and Tory Zollinger, respectively.

GEN Wayne A. Downing Scholarship ProgramSeven active duty officers participating in the West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG) GEN Wayne A. Downing Scholarship Program managed by the Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) spoke with cadets about their operational and graduate school experiences. Over 40 cadets associated with the CTC’s Irregular Warfare Group, the Department of Social Sciences, and the Department of Strategic Studies attended the Downing engagement, asking the officers about their summer research efforts and their academic experiences in general. The Downing Scholars also provided professional development advice to the cadets.

Army Blanks Navy in AnnapolisThe Army West Point women's rugby team earned a 67-point shutout victory in Saturday's matchup against service academy rival Navy on the road. The Black Knights improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Mids fall to 1-4. Army improved to 4-0 all-time against the Midshipmen dating back to the fall 2014 season. Today's victory marked the second victory for the Black Knights. Army's only other shutout came last season against Air Force, 43-0. Freshman Sam Sullivan recorded Army's first four-try game of the season, giving her five scores in her rookie campaign. Senior Savannah Murray made her first start of the season against the Mids. Sophomore Koi Kizzie scored her first-career try in her collegiate debut, lacing up with the starting unit. Read More

Club Hockey's Dominating Weekend

The Inline Hockey Club avenged its only loss of the season Friday night, beating Rowan University 3-2 at West Point's historic Tate Rink. Sunday's tilt was dominated by the men from West Point as they road-tripped and cruised 7-2 over Penn State Berks (ACHA DI). The team's record stands at 8-1-0 on the season. Army is on the road against Boston College and Roger Williams on October 29-30 and looks to continue its rise in the ACHA Southeast Region.
