DEP Art is Interdisciplinary Italian Renaissance AIADDepartment of English and Philosophy faculty members MAJ Adam Keller and Prof. Seth Herbst led five cadets on an AIAD that explored the cultural and aesthetic influences of Italian Renaissance art. The cadets spent the first week at USMA where they studied the political, economic, and cultural conditions that led to the Renaissance. Through a series of readings and guided seminar discussions, the cadets traced the development of painting, sculpture, and architecture in the Italian city-states of Florence and Rome, from the late byzantine period (late 12th and early 13th centuries) to the so-called “High Renaissance” of the late 16th century. The group departed for Italy, where they spent four days in Florence and Rome examining the masterpieces of famed Renaissance artists and architects, including Giotto, Brunelleschi, Masaccio, Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, and Leonardo da Vinci. The trip culminated with a visit to the Vatican Museum in Rome, where the group toured the Sistine Chapel.

Department of English and Philosophy WWII Case Study AIADOver the past two weeks, LTC Todd Burkhardt, and four Cadets traveled to Prague, Czech Republic, in order to study a historical case and the ethics of war regarding it. The AIAD focused on Nazi Germany’s unjust occupation of Czechoslovakia; Operation Anthropoid which was the assassination of the Butcher of Prague (SS-Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich) by the Czechoslovakian government-in-exile, the British Special Operations Executive, and the Czechoslovakian Special Forces; and on the reprisal that Adolf Hitler ordered on the town of Lidice which called for the complete destruction of all of its inhabitants (men, women, children, animals, and buildings). Cadets spent two days with Slovakian Special Forces officers (MAJ Tomas Bernat and CPT Viktor Szitkey) who introduced us to Mr. Emil Sneberg, a WWII Czech resistance fighter, as well as provided an amazing tour of the SS Gestapo HQ and interrogation cells, the War Museum, and of St. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral where the famed Czechoslovakia SF soldiers led by Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš made their final stand.

Writing Today Cadets meet with NPRIn conjunction with the West Point Writing Fellows program, the Department of English and Philosophy sponsored the “Writing Today” AIAD. Five cadets and two faculty members engaged in a comprehensive residential study of the vital roles that writing and its practice play in academia, government, journalism, non-profit foundations, corporate America, and in the lives of the nation’s veterans. Through on-site visits over eleven days throughout the Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington, D.C. area, cadets engaged with professors, social scientists, broadcasters and journalists, curators, consultants, and speechwriters at Johns Hopkins, the Naval Academy, Rutgers, the Frameworks Institute, NPR, the Smithsonian, Pherson Associates, Booz-Allen-Hamilton, the Pentagon, Congress, and the White House. Notably, cadets met with the speechwriting teams for the President of the United States, the Secretary of the Army, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chief and Vice Chiefs of Staff and the Sergeant Major of the Army, and interacted with the digital media staff of the Republican Conference in the House of Representatives. In each instance and across every discipline, cadets learned about the importance of audience, framing one’s narrative, and communicating with precision, concision, consistency, and substantive depth.

The 14th Annual eCyberMission challenge culminated 20-24 June 2016 in Leesburg, Virginia. What began with over 23,000 students at 584 schools was narrowed to eighty-six students on 23 teams competing to be the National Winners on projects spanning STEM-related projects. The Academy has been very active to support this effort spear-headed by the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP). Over the past few months approximately 800 cadets served as Student Judges and several faculty facilitated as Virtual Judges to narrow the field to Regional Finalists. LTC Melissa Eslinger, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Life Science, represented the Academy as a Judge at the National Judging and Educational Event (NJ&EE). Regional Finalists from across the nation in grades six through nine were evaluated on oral presentations, question & analysis sessions, and written mission project folders. These folders were designed to document efforts on solutions to community based problems formulated through collaborative efforts with universities and experts within respective fields. The events also presented several STEM Challenge Events in cooperation with the National Science Teachers’ Association (NSTA), the US Army Communications-Electronics Research Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC), the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the US Army Armament Research, Development, & Engineering Center (ARDEC), among others. The event ended with a keynote address by Ms. Mary Miller, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering and $5,000 savings bonds presented to the National Winners.

DEP Cadets visit London to study Shakespeare’s War PlaysThis June Cadets travelled to London, England to study Shakespeare and learn more about his historical influences. Focusing on Richard III and Macbeth, the cadets toured historical sites and took into account how historical realities affected Shakespeare’s fiction. Highlights of the trip included a tour of the Bloody Tower at the Tower of London, where Richard III allegedly had his two nephews killed, as well as the Richard III Museum in Leicester, England where the cadets viewed Richard III’s burial place and his skeleton, complete with the deformed spine. The high point of the trip was attending the Globe Theatre’s production of Macbeth after a day learning about the historical accuracies and inaccuracies regarding the actual Macbeth, as well as taking a class on stage fighting with both swords and daggers. While in England, the cadets also had the opportunity to visit the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst where they learned about their sister academy and socialized with British cadets. The cadets also had the rare opportunity to take part in the Academy’s Key Leader Engagement exercise, which included a mock Middle Eastern city.

CPT(R) Bucha ’65 Speaks to Plebes on Leadership

Retired Captain Paul Bucha, U.S. Military Academy Class of 1965 and Medal of Honor recipient, spoke to roughly 1,300 new cadets July 6 at Robinson Auditorium. When Bucha walked to the podium, he immediately began to pace the stage to talk to the cadets, keeping them at ease with humor, but humor with a purpose. “Tonight is a special night for you to understand what we, and people like me expect from you. It’s the result I want you to think about and you can’t do that all in class,” Bucha said. “The worst thing that can happen to you when you are attending a speech is when that one on stage starts looking for someone.”

“The first is honor,” Bucha said. “Upon which the other four rest and without honor there is no leadership. Honor is the willingness to trust and with willingness to trust is the willingness to fight. Honor is something that you work at. You are required to become a leader based on honor. That is where character comes from. When you go to war there is no person in the world who can see through BS more than an 18-year-old snuffy sitting on a rock smoking a cigarette.”

“You have to have humility,” Bucha added. “God forbid that you don’t have to do what I had to do. To write 10 letters home to mothers and fathers that their sons died under my command. But this is something you may have to do on your first command.” Bucha today still suppressed tears remembering the fallen in his unit. Read More
