The cadets taking part in this summer's Cold War Staff Ride, led by LTC(R) Ray Hrinko, MAJ Shauna Hann, and CPT Ben Griffin, attended a luncheon with LTG(R) Edward Rowny on 16 May 2016. Over the course of the afternoon, LTG Rowny talked with the cadets about his experience as an arms control negotiator for five presidents, beginning with President Nixon. In addition, he talked about how his 1936 semester abroad in Poland convinced him of the coming war and need to attend West Point, despite already holding a bachelor's degree and a commission in the Army Reserve. He then discussed his career, detailing his time as a planner for General MacArthur and his work on the plan for the Inchon landings during the Korean War. His lessons on officership, firsthand accounts of seminal Cold War events, and candid assessments of U.S. and Soviet positions made the event one that left a significant impression on the cadets and offered a perfect way to begin the staff ride.

West Point Historian Earns Army Award for ValorSecretary of the Army, Eric Fanning, presented The Secretary of the Army Award for Valor to USMA Historian Sherman Fleek on May 25 at the Pentagon. To be eligible for the award, the nominee must have distinguished themselves by exhibiting great courage or sacrifice involving heroism or bravery. Sherman Fleek did just that. While on leave in California in May of 2015, Fleek and a friend visited an I-HOP on a Sunday afternoon. As they waited for a table, Fleek heard screams from the next room and saw women running from their chairs. As he looked at the cashier counter, he witnessed a man holding a gun to the cashier, calling out, "Put all the money in the bag!" After a split-second of thought, Fleek's instincts kicked in. "Suddenly, a surge came to me," Fleek said. "I jumped up and rushed him. Read More

USMA Medical School Program Scholarships up 60%

0
0

Since its inception in 1977, the Medical School Option program at West Point, commonly known as the pre-med program, has sent approximately 20 cadets to medical school each year. The program has grown since its early days where cadets were pretty much on their own. Today, there is an established pre-med program similar to what you would see in any college across the country. Each cadet is assigned an advisor, and the advisor works with department academic counselors to assist cadets with course selection, prepare them for participation in the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation program, and guide them through the primary and secondary phases of the application process. Beginning approximately fifteen years ago, 100% of cadets in the program were admitted to a medical school, with 80% accepted to various schools by winter leave. Of those cadets accepted to medical school, many choose to enter one of the Army’s branches after graduation, deferring their medical school start date for two years. There are also one or two cadets each year who defer medical school because they have won other scholarships.

Each semester the West Point Pre-Medical Society, an academic club that helps prepare cadets for medical school, sponsors doc of the month speakers, visiting lectures, tours, and community service projects. During April of each year, Society members take a trip to Washington D.C. to shadow Army physicians at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for a day and tour the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS).

Each cadet is expected to meet thresholds related to his or her grade point average for all science courses completed, as well as the all-important MCAT. Cadets apply for one of two scholarships: The Health Professions Scholarship Program, which is for civilian schools of medicine, and the USUHS scholarship, which is for the military’s medical school. Cadets are allowed to interview during their seventh semester, and those accepted by a school of medicine are allowed to attend these schools following graduation. Cadets attending medical school incur additional active duty service obligations.

Typically, a third of cadets attend the USUHS, and these numbers have increased to sixty percent with the Class of 2016. Other cadets attend civilian schools of medicine, and for the first time two cadets have been accepted to the prestigious Stanford School of Medicine, with one of those cadets deciding instead to attend Harvard. The Class of 2016 will see Cadets Zach Affrin, Aaron Alindogan, Christian Burgos-Sanchez, Shena Cousens, Anthony Cox, Marco Dela Cruz, Erik Hegeman, Nolan Jones, Rebecca Lee, Nicholas Moran, Carissa Pekny, Virginia Phillips, and Derek Smart attend the USUHS. Cadet Joe Broderick will attend Johns Hopkins after a year in China studying rural medicine, Cadet Briana Johnson will attend Stanford, Cadet Regina Parker will attend Harvard, and Cadet Cole Patrick will attend Oklahoma University School of Medicine.

C&ME Operate, Lead and Win in a Complex World

C&ME Operate, Lead and Win in a Complex WorldThe Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering has adopted an increasingly vigorous project-based learning approach to its curricular content. Consistent with trends in undergraduate engineering education, CME leverages a robust summer individual academic development program and provides diverse options for independent studies for cadets who express a desire and aptitude to create depth within the field. A year-long senior capstone project synthesizes three years of core and program coursework and challenges cadets to solve relevant problems of great interest to the Department of Defense (DoD). Cadets in CME routinely publish technical articles, and many have been awarded provisional and full patents to protect the intellectual property developed by their creative problem-solving approaches in their capstone design.

Multi-Disciplinary Problem Solvers Supporting a Diverse Clientele. Cadets within the CME programs engage in projects spanning the breadth of their disciplines. Many projects directly support the Army Research Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) and its subordinate units. As one example, the Armament Research and Development Command (ARDEC) at Picatinny Arsenal, NJ, requested that cadets propose a flash suppressor for the M249 automatic weapon capable of withstanding the associated high rates of fire. Cadets designed, fabricated, and tested their design through multiple iterations culminating in a model that significantly reduced the audible and visual signature of the weapon. As a result of this success, ARDEC has rushed this prototype into field testing. The Structural Integrated Panel (SIP) hut project comprises cadets and faculty from civil, mechanical, and environmental engineering in collaboration to design a small unit shelter that four untrained Soldiers can erect in four hours without any previous site improvements. Novel contributions include a quickly deployable foundation system capable of placement on an unprepared site within an hour and a roofing system that is ready for photovoltaic panel deployment. Both U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) have requested fielding of these systems within their areas of operation due to their rapid assembly, energy efficiency, and low life-cycle cost of operation. Similarly, both the Holston and Radford Army Ammunition Plant commanders continually request essential engineering assessment of critical civil and environmental engineering issues within their respective facilities.

Operate, Lead and Win in a Complex World. The culture of excellence within CME allows project sponsors to set high expectations for their investment. Department cadets demand opportunities to demonstrate their ability to operate autonomously just as they will as junior officers in the Army. The Department constantly seeks high-payoff opportunities for cadet research and engineering across a wide range of sub-disciplines and tracks. In concert with the Center for Innovation and Engineering, the Civil and Mechanical Engineering programs foster a longitudinal academic experience that culminates with unique, novel, and substantial support to the Army and DoD while developing the critical thinking skills necessary for graduates to operate, lead, and win in a complex world.
