Gymnastics Sets Season-High Mark vs. Navy

CDT Cole Casanova '20The Army West Point gymnastics team posted a season-high in its 401.100 – 400.550 deficit to Navy on Saturday. The Black Knights notched a program record mark in still rings for the second time this season with a 67.300. Cole Casanova and Mathew Davis went one-two in the all-around. The Black Knights posted a program record on still rings with a 67.300 rating. Army topped its previous best mark which was set against Penn State earlier this season. The Cadets' 400.550 was the team's top mark this season. Casanova championed the meet with an 80.900 in all-around and was followed by Davis with a 67.600. Casanova placed first on both vault and parallel bars. Davis championed floor exercise. Taka Giese helped Army to the program mark on still rings with an event-leading and career-high 13.700 score. Women's Track And Field Completes Sweep Of NavyThe Army West Point women's track and field team defeated Navy in a thrilling Army-Navy Indoor Star Meet on Saturday.

The Cadets edged out their rival 89.5 to 88.5, clinching the victory in the final event of the afternoon.

Men's Track And Field Strong In Sweep Of NavyThe Army West Point men's track and field team defeated rival Navy to claim the Star in the 2019 Army-Navy Indoor Star Meet on Saturday.

The Cadets were strong across the board in a decisive 100-81 win at Gillis Field House.

The win was a part of a sweep of Navy by Army's men and women's cross country teams. Army and Navy are now tied at seven in the 2018-19 Star Series presented by USAA.

Army's 100-point performance is only the program's third in the history of the Indoor Star Meet. This also marks just the fifth time that the Black Knights have claimed both the men's and women's indoor meet. Read more.

Oliver Added to Army Executive Staff

Army West Point Athletics has announced the hiring of Jonathan Oliver as a Senior Associate Athletic Director for High Performance.

Oliver will oversee Army's athletic training and strength and conditioning departments as well as the nutrition program for its athletes.

"I am honored and excited to work with the stellar coaches and staff that have contributed to the rich history of Army, but most importantly the cadets-athletes," Oliver said. "These young men and women have a greater mission and I am excited to be a part of their development as athletes, but also as future leaders."

Before arriving at West Point, Oliver spent six years at Texas Christian University as an assistant professor within the department of kinesiology. In addition to his role as assistant professor, Oliver served as Director of The Sports Science Center at TCU, for which he also developed. As director, Oliver oversaw all aspects of the center's operations which provided a multidisciplinary approach to improving sport performance and athlete health for TCU athletics, local high schools, and professional sporting organizations. The Corbin Forum Hosts Girl Scout Troops

Cadets with the Corbin Forum hosted Girl Scout troops from New York and New Jersey recently. This event brought Girls Scouts between the ages of five and fourteen to West Point to have a fun team-bonding experience by camping out on the basketball court and participating in various workshops that taught them about confidence.

Black Knights Land 49 on Patriot Honor Roll

Army West Point placed 49 student-athletes from five teams on the 2018-19 Patriot League Fall Academic Honor Roll for strong performances in the classroom.

Women's soccer led the way with 15 honorees apiece followed closely by women's cross country (14) and men's cross country (11).

To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester and participate in one of the Patriot League's winter or spring championship sports. Read more.

GEN Benyasri Visits USMA

Royal Thai Armed Forces Chief of Defense Gen. Ponpipaat Benyasri visited the U.S. Military Academy to learn more about the academy and continue to strengthen the partnership between the two armies. There are currently three Thai cadets enrolled at WestPoint and 25 have graduated since 1930. A team from Thailand will also be participating in Sandhurst this year.

Lewis Named Defensive Line Coach

Lewis Named Defensive Line CoachArmy West Point head football coach Jeff Monken announced the hiring of Kevin Lewis to his staff on Tuesday. Lewis will oversee the Black Knights' defensive line, a position group he's very familiar with. He comes to the Banks of the Hudson with 12 years of experience coaching that unit, most recently a five-year stint at William and Mary. During his time with the Tribe, Lewis coached all-conference selections during each of his five seasons and helped three former defensive linemen earn NFL opportunities.

Highlighting those who benefited from Lewis' tutelage was All-American defensive end Mike Reilly. Honored as the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year, Reilly was a Buchanan Award Watch List selection and signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns following a tremendous senior campaign in which he ranked 13th nationally in sacks per game. Also garnering NFL opportunities were a pair of defensive tackles in Jasper Coleman and Tyler Claytor. Coleman, a 2014 Chuck Boone Leadership Award Nominee, signed a free agent contract with the Houston Texans following his senior season, while Claytor earned a tryout with the Chicago Bears after his first-team all-conference selection in 2016. Annual Army Fencing Tournament

Annual Army Fencing TournamentArmy Fencing held its annual tournament recently. The team hosted nine teams to include Navy, whom Army beat. Army women finished 3rd overall and men finished 5th. These standings are impressive given the majority of the teams are varsity. Navy sent a follow-up note that captured the tenure of the event-Thank you for putting on a great meet last weekend at West Point.

Climbing Hosts the Royal Military College of CanadaUSMA Climbing hosted a joint training exercise with Canadian counterparts in the Class of '79 Rock Wall and Arvin Gym. This event was held to strengthen the existing partnership with the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) and to share training knowledge and tips with regards to indoor sport climbing. This event was a great success, members of both teams were actively engaged in various activities throughout the weekend with a culmination of a joint training exercise. It was a great opportunity to showcase the Class of '79 wall as well as allow cadets to interact and compete with their counterparts from RMC.

Orienteering at the Navigator's Cup

Orienteering at the Navigator's CupOver the course of the weekend, the Orienteering Team competed in the Georgia Navigator’s Cup, a four-day navigational event, at Chattahoochee Bend State Park. This event consisted of three classic races and an aptly named Extreme-O course filled with unique obstacles and challenges. The team had many stellar and standout performances who placed highly in their respective categories. CDTs Fletcher, Aloma, and Parker swept the podium in the M-Red category for the weekend. Several team alumni from nearby Forts Benning, Rucker, and Gordon showed up to inspire and reconnect. The O-Team performed exceptionally and looks forward to continued excellence this spring season.

Jefferson Receives Patriot League Honors

CDT Kedrin Jefferson '21After posting a league leading time in Army's Star Meet victory over Navy, yearling Kedrin Jefferson was named Patriot League Male Track Athlete of the Week. The Memphis, Tenn., native followed up his program record setting performance in the 200m dash at the Penn State National Open with a nationally charting mark in the Army-Navy Star Meet. "Kedrin has really started to master the 200m event," head coach Mike Smith said. "He has reached a level of consistency now that places him among the better runners in the NCAA."

Jefferson's adjusted time of 21.12 is the top time recorded in the Patriot League this season and ranks 34th nationally. "There is still room for him to improve," Smith said. "I think we will be talking about him and his superlatives for the rest of the winter and into the spring." This marks the fourth time this season that a Black Knight has claimed the weekly honor for men's track. Cadets Host the Jean Bartik Computing SymposiumThe Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department hosted the Jean Bartik Computing Symposium. The symposium brought women and underrepresented minorities from computing disciplines at the service academies together with their counterparts in the military and government here at West Point. The event seeks to promote fellowship among women and minorities in computing majors and provide technical training through interactive workshops.

Army Crew Defeats RMCArmy Crew competed against the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) during the annual exchange. Army defeated RMC with an overall time of 2:00.47, which was 6 minutes and 30 seconds faster than RMC. The competition is a series of head to head 2000-meter erg races where the fastest times are aggregated to determine the overall winner. For this year's competition, six Varsity Men, three Novice Women, eight Novice Men, and one Coxswain competed in seven heats. The event concluded with a mixed relay race and an awards ceremony.

Powerlifting at the Northeast Iron Beast

Powerlifting at the Northeast Iron BeastThe Army Powerlifting Team (APL) competed in the Northeast Iron Beast (NEIB) competition to qualify the team’s lifters for Collegiate Nationals. The team put up an outstanding performance with all thirteen lifters qualifying and taking home a total of 18 medals with eight gold, five silver and five bronze. With nearly 140 registered competitors, this was the largest North East Iron Beast competition in history. Although winter storms threatened to cancel the meet, most competitors braved the elements to showcase their strength. Of note, NEIB continues to be an excellent opportunity to strengthen Army Powerlifting's relationship with the USA Powerlifting Association, as well as other lifting teams across the region. From a strategic, team-internal perspective, Army Powerlifting has now qualified all but seven members of the squad for Powerlifting Collegiate Nationals 2019.


Debate at the McGill University Model UN Conference

Debate at the McGill University Model UN ConferenceTen cadets of the United States Military Academy Model United Nations team traveled to Montreal, Quebec to participate in McGill University Model United Nations Conference (McMUN) hosted by McGill University. McMUN presented the West Point MUN team with the opportunity to develop public speaking skills, gain knowledge of international affairs, and represent USMA and the US Army in a professional and positive way to an international student audience. Schools in attendance included Georgetown University, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, Florida International University, and American University, among many others. Cadets participated in many interesting debate topics including but not limited to international cooperation to combat Alzheimer's Disease in WHO, economic reconstruction and microfinancing in ECOFIN, efforts to combat illicit arms trafficking across nation-states in UNGA Special Assembly, and international legal arbitration between Russia and the United States in the ICJ.

The conference ended with multiple cadets earning individual awards, with the entire team performing well and displaying exceptional speaking skills, negotiation, and cooperative problem solving with over 1,600 other students from domestic and international universities. The following cadets were individually recognized for their outstanding performances: John Govern '19, Jason Filios '22, Katarina Christianson '21 and Jake Stoffel '19. The following cadets were also integral to the team's success: Joel Macklin '19, Dana Cody '20, George Pavlakis '21, Noah Kim '22, Ben Snyder '21, Hunter Arnold '21, Amanda Horsey '19, Cam Hay '21 and Jack Chu '19.

Kirk Named AWPAA Athlete of The Week

CDT Geoff Kirk '21After setting a program record in Army West Point men's track and field's Star Meet victory over service-academy rival Navy, yearling Geoff Kirk has been named AWPAA Athlete of the Week.

Kirk set the program record for men's shot put for the second consecutive week, posting a distance of 17.94m.

Prior to Kirk's record-breaking performance on Saturday, he broke Duance Fuller's 1979 record of 17.41m with a throw of 17.49m at the Penn State National Open.

The Avon, Conn., native will look to carry his success into the Patriot League Championships which begin on February 16.

USMA Cyber Team Wins in France

USMA Cyber Team Wins in FranceThe West Point Cyber Policy team won its fourth Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge competition in France. The Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge is designed to offer students across a wide range of academic disciplines a better understanding of the policy challenges associated with cyber conflict.

The Cyber Policy team represents five different majors: Computer Science, International Relations, Economics, Operations Research and Law. Preparing for the competition involved not only understanding the relevant laws, strategies and institutions of France and the European Union, but also the processes and timelines involved in using them.

“What the cadets accomplished is tremendous and a testament to their hard work and the resources the academy and Army Cyber Institute have made available to them,” Major Patrick Bell, Army Cyber Institute research scientist and a Cyber Policy team coach, said. “To put this into perspective, our team of American undergraduate students won a competition in France, where they notionally advised the French president, while competing against teams of elite French graduate school students and were judged by an expert panel of mostly French judges.” Read more.

Drinkall Joins Army Football Staff

Army West Point head football coach Jeff Monken announced the addition of Matt Drinkall to his staff Thursday. Drinkall joins the Army staff as the offensive quality control coach. He comes to the Banks of the Hudson after a very successful five-year stint as the head coach at Kansas Wesleyan where the Coyotes were 42-17, including a 37-12 slate against KCAC opponents. His last four teams won 40 games (40-8) during the best four-year run in school history. He departed holding the fourth-highest win total in program history as well.

The culmination of that was in 2018 when Wesleyan won its first conference championship since 2002 after going 10-0 and advancing to the semifinals of the NAIA National Championship. The Coyotes posted a program-best 13-1 record and shattered virtually every school and numerous KCAC and NAIA records in the process during their historic season.

In 2017, the Coyotes continued their renewed success under Drinkall by posting an 8-3 overall mark and a 7-2 record in the KCAC. He coached a pair of AFCA and Associated Press NAIA All-Americans in 2017 in Trenton Poe-Evans and Garrett Updegraft. Wesleyan's offense ranked No. 6 in the NAIA in sacks allowed, No. 20 in scoring offense, and No. 24 in total offense. Senior Tyler Welch led the NAIA in kickoff return yards, Updegraft ranked third in the NAIA in tackles per game and Poe-Evans led all NAIA tight ends in receiving yards, touchdowns, receptions and receptions per game. Cadets Visit the Japanese Weekend SchoolSeven Cadets of Japanese Forum Club visited Japanese Weekend School in NJ and they supported Japanese Exchange Officers to brief students and parents of the school regarding USMA and NDAJ (National Defense Academy of Japan) and Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF). Cadets answered several questions by participants and they talked about their cadet life.
