Army Taekwondo Defeats NavyThe Army Tae Kwon Do team defeated Navy in spectacular fashion to secure the Army/Navy Warrior Cup for the second year in a row. The event, held in Ike's Riverside Café, was the first time West Point hosted the event, well attended by both cadets and faculty alike, creating an environment that promoted Army's close, but decisive, victory. The night started out with three exhibition matches featuring An Vu, Madeline Ryu and Takhyun Cho, with Vu and Cho claiming victory against higher ranked opponents. The main event consisted of ten black belt matches, with scoring being dependent on the sum score of all the matches, not individual match wins, although match wins can be indicator of a close match and can rule as a tie breaker.

The Army team consisted of cadets Natasha Chick, Hevin Na, Anthony Chargualaf, Jordan Nettles, Ziwei Peng, Mathew Galea, Nicole Nettles, Taylor Reim, Eli Eichenberger and David Kim. It was constant battle for points, the lead changing four times before the end of the match. Navy started out in front, but Chargualaf's stunning 20-point win against Navy's MIDN Michael Kron put Army ahead. The Army team was winning by four points going into the final match, pitting CDT David Kim against MIDN Brian Tat. Both fighters fought well while Tat gained a two-point lead in the last minute of the match, but Kim pressed forward and scored a head kick to win his match and finalize the score to 152-146 Army. At the end of the day, the Army Taekwondo team lifted the Warrior Cup high above their heads in celebration. MVP of the match was CDT Anthony Chargualaf.

MAJ Song General Biology Guest LectureMAJ Steve Song, an instructor from the Department of Systems Engineering served as a guest lecturer in General Biology. The lecture, “Thinking about Systems” served as an introductory lesson to systems theory, covering the characteristics of a system, systems thinking, and systems dynamics. The lecture was positioned as the first lecture in the human physiology block. During this block cadets will explore various organ systems in the human body and seek to understand how those systems function and interact to maintain homeostasis. MAJ Song used various examples of common systems to challenge cadets in their approach to problem solving, while also relating systems thinking to previous lessons such as cellular systems, ecosystems, and population dynamics. The feedback from the cadets was extremely positive, as they enjoyed an instructor from a seemingly “unrelated” department “tying together” so many of the concepts they have been discussing throughout the course.

Fireside Chat with Demetriouse RussellExcel Scholar cadets and faculty attended the third Fireside Chat of the 2018 academic year. The guest speaker was Demetriouse Russell, Managing Director and Founder of Venn Diagram Partners. Venn Diagram is a global consulting collaborative specializing in leadership development, executive coaching and diversity and inclusion. Russell centered his talk around the concept of being an agent for change in a community. He challenged the audience with the question "who are you as a possibility in the community?" He made the point that cadets do not come to USMA to "play small," as they have a real opportunity to effect change on a world-wide scale. Russell argued that a leader championing new ideas or concepts must enroll members of the community to rally behind the cause, emphasizing the need for leaders to focus not on "I," but on "we."

The panel included Keith Weinstein '99 and retired EECS Department Head, BG(R) Gene Ressler, along with a USAFA graduate and a civilian engineer. Topics of discussion focused on Google's model of innovation, accountability, and technical leadership, and the shared lessons for military leaders.

In a collaborative exercise, cadets learned about Google's principles of innovation (e.g. "focus on the user," "fail fast,"...), and participated in a hands-on project to develop, test, and deploy an innovative design for a paper airplane. The Defense Strategic Studies program seeks to introduce cadets to the innovation process of Fortune 500 companies each semester. The course on Military Innovation primarily focuses on military case studies. The quarterly collaboration with Google provides cadets with firsthand experience in innovation in civilian industry. The cadets were selected for displaying creativity and technical ability beyond course expectations in a recent week-long "technology application" project.
