Cadets Help Students Understand Pollution RunoffA seventh-grade team from the Explorer Club 360, and a ninth-grade team from the Sea Scouts, are collecting bed stream soil and water samples along the course of the Cahoon Creek. The students gathered at the mouth of the creek where it flows into Lake Erie for a discussion with associate professor Lt. Col. Paul Moody. Moody answered questions and provided insight into the effects soil types can have on ground water pollution. Determining if the creek bed is clay, and therefore impervious, or sand will have an impact on the effects of runoff into the creek. The ninth-graders plan on using the Field Soil Calculator App developed by West Point cadets Ryan Kowal and Walter Iradikunda to classify the soil in the stream bed. Read More

Cadets Rank Third in the NSA Codebreaker Challenge 2017Cadets and faculty ranked third at the conclusion of the 2016 NSA Codebreaker Challenge, which ran from 10 September to 31 December 2016. The challenge, as stated by the NSA, “…offers college undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to see the kinds of problems NSA faces on a daily basis and then replicate the process NSA uses to devise a solution. Current cyber security students are able to mimic a common problem that NSA addresses regularly and determine if they have what it takes to work at the agency. This year, the scenario will revolve around finding an improvised explosive device (IED) and having the students figure out how to reverse engineer and then disarm the IED. The 2016 scenario differs from previous challenges in that it provides insight into both offensive and defensive missions of the agency.”

USMA placed ahead of NPS (4th), USAFA (127th), AFIT (138th), and USNA (163rd). Challenge rankings are based upon time to complete tasks and total number of participants from a school to complete as many tasks as possible. Cadets Parker, Maixner, and Kim made the greatest contributions in USMA’s ranking for this challenge. LTC Moody, MAJ(P) Bundt, and CPT Sherburne participated as faculty.

Researchers at the United States Military Academy at West Point wanted to better understand the impact of laptops and tablets in the classroom. In particular, they were interested in whether or not classroom computer use makes a difference to students' grades. How did they study the issue? They set up an experiment. They took an introductory economics course and split the students into three groups. One group was allowed to use a laptop or tablet in class to take notes or to use an electronic version of their textbook. The second group was allowed to use tablet computers, but only if the tablet remained flat on the desk, face-up during class. And the third group, the control group, was "technology-free": no laptops or tablets were allowed. The researchers found that "permitting computers negatively impacts scores." In other words, the students who were allowed to use computers in class did worse on the exam. Just how much worse depended on the type of question: whether it was a multiple-choice, short answer or essay question.
