Gahagen Backstops Army to Win Over Colgate

CDT Parker Gahagen '17The Army West Point hockey team scored four unanswered goals, including two on the power play, and Parker Gahagen made 48 saves to overtake Colgate, 4-1, on Saturday evening at the Ledyard Bank Classic at Dartmouth. Colgate (4-11-4) got the first lead of the game with Tim Harrison scoring early in the second period as he put home a rebound in front. Parker Gahagen stood tall in net after giving up the first goal of the game. The net-minder made a career-high 48 saves for his 10th win of the year. Gahagen's previous high was 45 against Holy Cross in 2014. Army (10-6-2) responded after Harrison's tally with three unanswered goals in the middle frame to take a 3-1 lead into the final frame. Evancho Collects AHA Rookie of the Week Honors

CDT Zach Evancho '20Following a two-point weekend at the Ledyard Classic, Plebe Zach Evancho of the Army West Point hockey team has been named the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week, announced by the league yesterday. This is Evancho's first nod from the league in his career, and he is the third Black Knight to receive Rookie of the Week distinction for the 2016-17 season. The Buffalo, NY native extended his point streak to five games with an assist opposite Dartmouth in the team's 2-2 tie and the game-winning goal against Colgate. Evancho has been a constant for the Cadets on the power play and netted his fifth of the year this past weekend against Colgate. Currently, Evancho ranks second for Army in points with 13. He led the team during the month of December on four goals and two assists. Read More

Madison Hovren Lands Player of the Week Nod

CDT Madison Hovren '19Yearling forward Madison Hovren garnered Patriot League Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season on Tuesday, after notching a pair of double-doubles to begin Patriot League action. The Patriot League Player of the Week recognition is the fourth this season for Hovren, and is also the fourth of her career. Hovren averaged 25.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in two contests to start Patriot League competition. She netted a career-high 28 points and added 13 rebounds in Army's 75-71 win over Lehigh on December 30. Hovren made four free throws in the final 1:08 of the game to help the Cadets seal the victory, and made a career-best 12 free throws on a 12-for-12 shooting night from the line. Read More

Bradshaw Named Army's Athlete of the Week

Following his brilliant performance against North Texas in the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl, Cow quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week. Bradshaw led his team to its first bowl victory since 2010 with 129 rushing yards, including a career-long 65-yard touchdown run. The 129 rushing yards were the second most for a quarterback in Cotton Bowl Stadium history, passing Texas' Vince Young, who ran for 127 yards against Oklahoma in 2003. The Chicago native marched Army down the field for five scoring drives, including two of 10 or more plays. He rushed for seven yards in overtime and pitched the ball to Jordan Asberry on 4th-and-goal, leading to the eventual game winning touchdown as Army won 38-31 over North Texas. Bradshaw was named the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl's Most Valuable Player and was also 2-for-3 through the air for 53 yards, including a 38-yard pass to Tyler Campbell. Read More

Gahagen Picks up Goalie of the Month Accolades

CDT Parker Gahagen '17After posting a 4-1-1 record in the month of December, Firstie Parker Gahagen of the Army West Point hockey team was recognized as the Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Month for the second time this season. The Buffalo, NY native is riding a four-game unbeaten streak, the longest of his career, and notched a career-high 48 saves against Colgate on Saturday night. Gahagen allowed just eight goals in December for a goals against average of 1.32. He also boasted 189 stops last month to give him a .959 save percentage. This season, Gahagen leads the nation in shutouts with four. He ranks third in the nation with a .943 saves percentage, and in goals against average at 1.66. The Black Knights' defense has also been successful and is second nationally, allowing just 1.78 goals per game. Gahagen also backs the team's penalty kill unit which has the second-best kill rate in the country at .899. Read More

Army Prepares for Bentley and Frozen Fenway

Army Prepares for Bentley and Frozen FenwayRiding a four-game unbeaten streak, the Army West Point hockey team returns to Atlantic Hockey action Thursday and Friday night against Bentley. It is a special weekend for the two squads as the Black Knights and Falcons will first square-off at Frozen Fenway as part of the outdoor winter series held in Boston. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at the home of the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. It is the current Black Knights' first time playing in an outdoor rink. Although the West Point hockey program was started on an outdoor frozen pond on the banks of the Hudson, the Cadets' last outing on a frozen pond was in 2012 when they faced AIC at Rentschler Field in February of 2011 and won 4-1. Friday night's contest will be back at Bentley's Ryan Skating Arena with a 7:05 p.m. start to wrap-up the weekend. Read More

Epps Named to CSN All-Freshman Squad

CDT Rex Epps '20Forward Plebe Rex Epps was recently selected to the College Soccer News All-Freshman third team after tying for first in the Patriot League with 11 goals during his first season at West Point. Epps was one of 35 freshman from the NCAA Division I ranks to be honored by College Soccer News, and was one of two from the Patriot League to be recognized, along with Loyola's Brian Saramago (second team). Epps scored 11 goals in 2016 to tie for first in the Patriot League with Bucknell's Sebastiaan Blickman. His 11 goals this past season were the most by a Black Knight since John Brence scored 12 times in 1988. Epps also led the Patriot League with five game-winning goals and started in all 18 of Army's matches. Read More

Army Wins Triple-Overtime Thriller Over Lafayette

Cow Janae McNeal made game-tying shots at the end of the regulation and the end of double overtime during Army's 76-73 triple-overtime win against Lafayette in a Patriot League contest on Thursday night at Christl Arena. Army improves to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League following the win, while Lafayette drops to 1-14 and 0-3. McNeal hit a buzzer-beating lay-up with 1.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 55-55. Click here for the video recap: https://youtu.be/4V-cDQZAO1w. The lay-up was reviewed and the call stood as a made lay-up. She added a jumper with five ticks left in double overtime to again deadlock the game, this time at 69-69 to send the game to triple overtime. Army outscored Lafayette, 7-4, in the third overtime period to seal the win. Yearling Madison Hovren scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed 10 boards for her third straight double-double, and her ninth of the season. McNeal finished with 15 points and seven rebounds and yearling Jess Lewis tallied nine points. Cow Destinee Morris had eight points and five steals and classmate Daizjah Morris also added five steals, as the Black Knights recorded 17 steals on the night. Read More


Cadets and Falcons Skate to a Draw at the JAR

CDT Brendan Soucie '20After taking an early lead, the Army West Point hockey team tied Bentley 5-5 in the final game of the weekend series. The Black Knights (10-7-3, 9-5-1 AHA) tied their first Atlantic Hockey matchup of the season after the Falcons netted the final three goals of the game which forced the extra time. Zach Evancho, Brendan Soucie, Conor Andrle and Alex Wilkinson scored Army's goals with Soucie netting two. Parker Gahagen finished the night with 30 saves. Evancho increased his point streak to seven games. Over the stretch, he has posted eight points for the Cadets. It was also his seventh power play goal of the season to rank him second nationally this season. Wilkinson's assist was his ninth of the year, the most of an Army defender this year. Tyler Pham dished out his sixth assist in the last six games for Army to increase his total on the year to 10. He and freshman Dominic Franco are the only two Cadets with double-digit assist totals. Cadets Post Strong Showing at Wagner Invite

Mens Track and FieldThe Army West Point men's track and field team had a strong showing at the Wagner Invitational on Friday. The 60-meter dash featured a win from sophomore Ben Sims with a season high time of 6.81 seconds. Sims was joined by Tyler Davis in third, Kevin Dyer in fifth and Andre Vaughn in seventh with time of 6.88, 6.95 and 7.02 seconds, respectively. Dyer also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a clocking of 22.03 seconds to go along with senior Jose Santana who placed eighth with a time of 22.62 seconds. First-year Tyrell Maddox continued to stand out in the 500 meters placing third with a time of 1:04.76. The 800-meter run featured four Black Knights in the top ten with Trevor Touchton notching third (1:57.35), Anthony Boswell placing fourth (1:57.39), Nick Causey crossing in fifth (1:57.40) and John Monday earning ninth (1:58.84). The mile featured first-year standouts Keagan Smith finishing sixth with a clocking of 4:20.92 and Roman Ollar placing eighth with a time of 4:22.33. Wrestling Tops Wyoming, American at AU Duals

CDT Trevor Smith '17The Army West Point wrestling team battled its way to a 2-1 record at the American Duals, defeating American, 18-15, and 23rd-ranked Wyoming, 18-12, on Saturday at Bender Arena. The Tar Heels posted a perfect 3-0 record on the day to improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Black Knights jump to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) contests. American's 1-2 showing puts then at 3-3 as well and 0-2 in EIWA action. The Cowboys, who entered the event as the only team ranked by InterMat, dropped all three of its matches, falling to 1-4 on the year. The Black Knights improve to 5-1 versus American and 2-0 opposite Wyoming all-time. This was the first Army win over a ranked team since the 2011-12 season when it defeated 25th-ranked Harvard, 24-17. Army Nabs First Patriot League Victory Against Loyola

CDT John Emezie '19The Army West Point men's basketball team led wire-to-wire Sunday afternoon to register their first Patriot League victory of the early season. Army started hot and never really looked back defeating a strong Loyola team, 66-57. The Black Knights showcased solid defense in the opening period, holding the Greyhounds to just 19 points on 30.8 percent shooting. The Greyhounds' 19 points marked Army's best defensive effort in an opening period of play and second best defensive half overall this season. Army held a slim 7-6 advantage just five minutes into the contest. The Black Knights added on using a 13-0 run to break the game open at 20-6. Army kept its visitor scoreless for a little less than seven and a half minutes during that span. The Cadets then continued to control the game, taking the 29-19 lead into the locker room. Read More

Women's Swimming and Diving Tops Lehigh

CDT Kelly Hamilton '17The Army West Point women's swimming and diving team defeated Lehigh, 170-128, at Crandall Pool. The victory marked the Black Knights' first Patriot League win of the season. he 400-yard medley relay team comprised of Kelly Hamilton, Kara Wineinger, Kaylie Breslin and Bailey Smith took home first place with a time of 3:54.43. Hamilton also nabbed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 52.44 seconds. Sabrina Mortell blew away the competition in the 1000-yard freestyle by almost eight seconds, with a clocking of 10:29.70. Kara Wineinger and Jess Ambrose went 1-2 in the women's 100-yard breaststroke with marks of 1:05.65 and 11:06.48, respectively. Army swept the top-four spots in the women's 100-yard backstroke, led by Hamilton, who finished first in 56.72 seconds. Cecilia Croman (58.49 seconds), Kim Sembrano (59.08 seconds) and Josephine Marsh (59.75 seconds) rounded out the next three spots for the Black Knights. Marsh finished first and Jess Burkett took second in the women's 200-yard backstroke with times of 2:05.16 and 2:05.64, respectively. Hovren Collects Fifth Player of the Week Honor

CDT Madison Hovren '19Yearling Madison Hovren was named Patriot League Player of the Week for the second week in a row, and for the fifth time this season, after posting a pair of double-doubles last week. The Patriot League Player of the Week recognition is the fifth this season for Hovren, and is also the fifth of her career. Hovren averaged 27.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in two games last week, including a 76-73 triple overtime-win against Lafayette on Jan. 5 and a 71-62 setback at Loyola on Jan. 8. The yearling scored a career-high 35 points and added 10 boards, three blocks and three assists in the triple-overtime victory versus Lafayette. She went 17-of-23 from the foul line, with her 17 free throws marking a career high. Hovren netted all seven of Army's points in the third overtime period to help the Black Knights come away with the three-point win. Hovren led Army with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the Loyola game. Johnson Receives Preseason Accolades

CDT Cole Johnson '17Firstie attackman Cole Johnson received preseason accolades from Inside Lacrosse as he was named a Preseason Second Team All-American. Johnson enters his final season after one of the best offensive years in Army lacrosse history with 73 points in 17 games in 2016. He tallied 35 goals and 38 assists. He was on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and a first team All-Patriot League performer. The 73 points scored were the second most all-time for a single season in Army's 99-year lacrosse history. Johnson was second in the Patriot League in points per game at 4.29 and second in assists per game at 2.24. He had an unbelievable stretch of five games where he scored seven more points for a total of 35 points and had multi-point games in all but two games in 2016. Parsons Tabbed as Army’s Athlete of the Week

The Army Athletic Association named firstie wrestler Russ Parsons as its Athlete of the Week for his 3-0 performance at the American Duals last weekend. Parsons improved to 16-3 on the season and 5-1 in duals, a mark that is tied for the team lead. The Clinton, NJ, native notched win No. 70 of his career with a 6-2 decision over Cole Moseley of American before defeating Wyoming's 12th-ranked 157-pounder, Archie Colgan, 6-1. The team's co-captain's efforts helped the Black Knights earn their first win against a ranked opponent since 2011-12 when it defeated 25th-ranked Harvard, 24-17. Army went 2-1 on the weekend, earning wins over American (18-15) and 23rd-ranked Wyoming, 18-12, after dropping its opening match to North Carolina, 6-25. Parachute Brings Home GoldMembers of the West Point Parachute Team won multiple gold medals during winter break at the 2016 U.S. Parachute Association National Collegiate Parachuting (USPA) Championships, the oldest and biggest collegiate skydiving event in the world, held at Skydive Arizona, south of Phoenix. This year's championships drew 80 collegiate skydivers from around the country to compete for the title of national collegiate champion in four spectacular skydiving disciplines: Formation Skydiving, Vertical Formation Skydiving, Sport Accuracy and Classic Accuracy.

USMA cadets won gold in both the 2-way and 6-way formation skydiving events. In formation skydiving, the team leaps from an aircraft more than two miles above the ground and then races against the clock to form prescribed geometric formations in freefall before opening their parachutes. Two-way team members are Cadets Michael Colella and Camm Johnson. Six-way team members are Cadets Zachary Beavor, Aleksa Davis, Joseph Presti, Ishmael Raheem, Jacob Shepherd and Clinton Wallace.

In addition, West Point's John Snurkowski took gold in the classic accuracy competition, in which jumpers exit an airplane more than 3,000 feet in the air and then steer their parachutes and try to land on a dime-sized dot on a landing tuffet. West Point also won the team sport accuracy event. In this event, skydivers try to land their parachutes as close as possible to a target while flying across the ground at high speeds. Team members are Davis, Presti, Raheem and Kristopher Hayhurst. Additionally, Cadet Thomas Rounds won gold in individual novice sport accuracy.

King Selected to East-West Shrine Game Roster

CDT Andrew King '17Firstie linebacker Andrew King will participate in the 92nd East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, FL, on January 21 at 3 p.m. The game is going to be live on NFL Network and broadcast live on SB Nation Radio and Sirius XM NFL Channel 88. To view the acceptances and team rosters, Click Here. King will be among the top talent from college football at Tropicana Field and is set to play for the East squad. The three-year starter had an outstanding year for the Black Knights with a career best 97 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss. The co-captain ended his career with 255 total tackles and 35.5 tackles for loss in 39 career games. In addition to King, Army will have another representative at the game as head equipment manager Nick Determan is the equipment manager for the game as well. Created by the Shriners in 1925, the East-West Shrine Game was the nation's first college all-star football game. The game is driven by the desire to support Shriners Hospitals for Children in its mission to help children in need of expert medical care. Read More

Hovren’s Double-Double Fuels Army Past Colgate

CDT Madison Hovren '19Yearling Madison Hovren netted 30 points and tied an Army single-game record with 22 rebounds to lead the Army West Point women's basketball team to a 76-69 win over Colgate in Patriot League action on Wednesday afternoon at Cotterell Court. Army improves to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League with the win, while Colgate falls to 5-11 and 2-3. Hovren finished with at least 30 points for the second time this season after scoring a career-best 35 against Lafayette on Jan. 5. The sophomore's 22 rebounds matched the team single-game record set by Army Hall-of-Famer Pam Pearson (USMA '86) on Jan. 2, 1984 against St. Francis (Ill.). The double-double is her fifth in a row and 11th of the year. Read More
