Sokal Speaks on Subterranean Warfare & Emerging TechBrigadier General Nechemya Sokal, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces’ Technology Branch, spoke with cadets on subterranean warfare and emerging technologies. How should modern militaries adapt when they discover that their adversaries are literally tunneling beneath them? How does the pervasiveness of social media on the battlefield affect the way wars are fought? What impact will increasingly autonomous systems, 3-D printing and cutting-edge off-the-shelf technology have on tomorrow’s battlefield? These were among the questions discussed by BG Nechemya Sokal at an event organized by the Modern War Institute (MWI) at West Point. MWI Director Colonel Liam Collins first asked Sokal about Israeli Forces’ experiences with subterranean warfare. Tunnels have long been used for smuggling purposes in the region, Sokal said. Many of the buildings in Gaza are connected by these underground passageways. Read More

The Army West Point football team touched down in Texas and quickly jumped back into the swing of things on Thursday night. The Black Knights regrouped after a couple days off for their first practice in the Lone Star State. The warmer weather when the Black Knights landed quickly disappeared once the sun went down to make for a chilly practice at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Click here for the video: https://youtu.be/mbnuIGTBTik. Army was familiar with its practice facility as the Cadets used Southern Methodist University amenities. SMU was the site of the Black Knights' last bowl game in which Army defeated the Mustangs 16-14 to win the 2010 Armed Forces Bowl. The hype around Thursday's practice felt just like that bowl game as players were excited about having the opportunity to spend a couple more days together out on the gridiron. Read More

Cadets Relate the Principles of Vibration 28 Cadets from the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering’s Vibrations Engineering course (MC486) spent an afternoon learning about acoustic principles with SFC Branden Lane from the USMA Band. This learning experience gave cadets the opportunity to relate the vibration principles they learned throughout the course toward a new context. After orienting the cadets to the basic physical principles governing musical instrument operation, SFC Lane explained how physical space may affect sound quality. The lab culminated with SFC Lane demonstrating how modern mixing software can be used to enhance the quality of a person’s singing.

Cadet Soldier Centric SE Project 1Soldier Load Effects Measurement Methodology The first project briefing summarized work to date on the development of a Soldier load effects measurement methodology. This cadet group leveraged an existing measurement system, the Load Effects Assessment Program – Army (LEAP-A) obstacle course. The cadets led an interdisciplinary experiment with kinesiology faculty, Dr. Hewit and Dr. Jaffe, from the Department of Physical Education (DPE). During the month of October, the experimental team collected data on 35 cadets and officers that completed the LEAP-A course, totaling over 28 hours of experimentation. The experiment occurred on the River Courts and occupied approximately ½ acre of field space. Personnel from PEO Soldier and the Maneuver Battle Lab, Fort Benning, supported obstacle course setup and removal. Data collected includes individual obstacle times, aggregate course time, heart rate, electromyography (EMG, muscle contraction data), vertical jump, horizontal and vertical transfer performance, motion capture video of three obstacles, and pressure plate measurement. The research team will investigate load effects measurement methodologies and propose improvements, both inclusive and exclusive of the LEAP-A. The client for this study, PM SWAR, ultimately needs a better understanding of load limits and an assessment methodology capable of supporting current and future materiel acquisition decisions. The Soldier load effects measurement methodology cadet capstone team includes Cadets Murray, Pattillo, Robertson, and Ross.

The Army West Point football team got some revenge Tuesday afternoon when it defeated North Texas 38-31 in overtime to win the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl. The victory marked Army's first bowl win since 2010 and the first time the Black Knights reached eight wins since the 1996 season. Army closed out the year with three straight victories including an iconic win a little more than two weeks ago in Baltimore over rival Navy. Click here for the video recap: https://youtu.be/XWdHykIg6pY. Tuesday's game was much different from the two teams earlier meeting back on Oct. 22 in which the Black Knights turned the ball over a season-high seven times. Army controlled much of the opening two quarters but a late rally from North Texas pulled the Mean Green to within 24-21 at the break. Heading into the final quarter, Army maintained a slim 31-28 edge until there were 28 seconds remaining. The Mean Green, forced with 4th-and-2, kicked the game-tying field goal from 37 yards out to eventually send the contest into overtime. Read More

Cadet Soldier Centric SE Project 2The second project briefing summarized work to date on a small unit energy consumption model. This model builds energy consumption estimates from validated operational mission summaries for small units, energy consumption specifications collected on Soldier equipment, and equipment configuration profiles. The model also considers power generation equipment and tactical power charging opportunities. Progress to date includes a prototype model written in python with an Excel based user interface and data configuration file. The model has been designed in a scalable manner, capable of adapting to changes in mission summaries, equipment configurations, and equipment energy consumption specifications. The project team has benefited from numerous meetings with engineers and scientists from the Natick Soldier RDEC, the Naval Surface Warfare Center (Dahlgren), the Maneuver Center of Excellence, and PEO Soldier. PM SWAR intends to use this model to support battery load estimates for future equipment ensembles. The small unit energy consumption model cadet capstone team includes Cadets Larry, Malm-Annan, Maldonado, and Arcilla.

STEM Seminar with O’Neill High SchoolIn conjunction with the USMAPS Math Department and faculty members from D/Systems Engineering, D/Math hosted 80 Algebra I students and five faculty members from James I. O'Neill High School in Highland Falls for a full-day STEM seminar recently. The students participated in several hands-on workshops including bridge building, drone flying and flight planning, robotics, origami, and projectile motion. During each workshop, students were introduced to the basic math models underlying the activity, were given short calculation problems requiring the application of Algebra I skills, and then were asked to develop a hands-on solution for an applied problem. The students also toured the Simon Center for the Professional Military Ethic and received an information briefing on the cadet honor code. During the opening ice breaker, it was discovered that the O'Neill students have some special insights. The day began with a warm-up activity during which the students were asked to make "coolness" graphs. That is, the y-axis was defined from not cool to really cool, and the students could define the x-axis however they wanted. They then had to draw an appropriate graph to reflect how "cool" the entry on the x-axis was. The winning entry, voted on by a panel of "expert" judges, selected the "football wins" graph. The graph showed "Army" football wins as really cool and "Navy" football wins as uncool!
