Dr. Bain visits the Department of MathThe Department of Math had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Ken Bain, historian, educator, and President, Best Teachers Institute, for a discussion about teaching and learning. Dr. Bain is the award-winning author of "What the Best College Teachers Do" and "What the Best College Students Do". Over 25 faculty members from the Department of Math were joined by over 25 faculty members from USMAPS, BS&L, and DEP for two informative, interactive, and engaging give-and-take discussions about how to effectively help students pursue deep learning. One of the key themes discussed was the importance of designing educational experiences that involve students in answering "good" questions. Dr. Bain defined a "good" question as one that stimulates the students' curiosity, places them in a situation that will challenge their pre-existing mental models, and is consequential or realistically meaningful. A second theme focused on the challenges of finding a balance between the creation of a learning environment in which students are able to try, fail, get feedback, and try again vice designing assessment processes that feed merit based ranking metrics, which often promote strategic rather than deep learning.

Cadets visit Indian Point Energy CenterCadets in NE300 Nuclear Engineering recently had the opportunity to tour the nuclear reactors at the Indian Point Energy Center (IPEC) in Buchanan, NY. This trip section is conducted every semester for NE300 and gives cadets a chance to see the principles of nuclear engineering applied on an industrial scale. Both NE majors and those enrolled in the NE sequence got to participate. It is valuable for all cadets, regardless of their major, to learn about the commercial nuclear power industry. Visiting an operating nuclear power plant is the best way to expose cadets to the scale of the operation as well as the layers of security and safety measures in place.

Dr. Colleen Eils Guest LecturesDr. Colleen Eils visited Patrick Query's EN351: World Literature class for four days of discussion on the Salvador Plascencia novel The People of Paper. A specialist in contemporary metafiction, Dr. Eils led the class through investigations of gender, representation, war, surveillance, and the porous line between reality and fiction in this experimental novel. Dr. Eils tells her students that in the study of literature we resolve nothing; rather, we learn to ask more and more questions. In these meetings, Cadets pursued question after question toward a richer understanding of the ways writing and reading, speech and silence, and looking and hiding shape lives on the page and off it.

Ethics Debate Team Wins First PlaceWest Point’s Ethics Debate Team won first place at the Northeast Regional Competition. The team, consisting of five debaters, Cadets Sandoval ’17, Hernandez ’17, Laval-Leyva ’17, Kehn ’18, and Frederickson ’20, recovered from a loss in the first round and went on to win five matches in a row, including an upset win in the final against reigning champions, Tufts University. Under the direction of CDT Sandoval, the team distinguished itself with its civility, incisive argumentation, and constructive commentary. Utilizing skills that West Point cultivates better than any other institution, the debaters responded to last minute shakeups to the team structure with coolness, quick thinking, and cooperative spirit. While all the members of the team made special contributions, CDT Frederickson deserves special mention. He was participating in his first debate and had not been expecting to compete until a few days prior to the competition. As luck would have it, the cases CDT Frederickson was responsible for were called in the second round (after the initial loss) and in the final round. In each case, CDT Frederickson handled the situation with grace, deftly articulating the team’s position and showing deep understanding of the issues. As a result of this win, the Ethics Debate Team will compete in the National Competition in Dallas, Texas in early 2017. This is another example of the department’s commitment to developing cadet’s ethical reasoning, civic responsibility, and effective communication.
